Avoiding Back Pain From Yard Work

Many areas are at the beginning of the warmer springtime months, and with summer right after that. It’s the time of year where back injury and pain is all too common, and usually preventable. It is important to remember to take precautions against hurting your back and maybe getting a lifelong injury that could so easily be avoided. With all the yard work and chores to get done (even those fun ones) it’s still very important to take care of your spine and make sure it keeps working well for a lifetime. The spine is the central ‘highway’ of your body and caring for it is one of the most important things you can do for health and well being.
Stretch!
It is something often repeated, but it remains a great and simple thing to do for your back. Proper stretching before any heavy lifting (in addition to lifting with your knees) can truly help prevent a whole array of injuries and problems.
Adjust.
Sitting at long lengths of time (even at a lawnmower) can spell disaster for your back. Remember to stop, and stretch and adjust often to avoid problems.
Be kind to your feet.
Wearing proper footwear is as important as wearing sun block in terms of back health. While yes, especially in the heat the temptation to wear flip flops (for an example) is a big one. Finding and wearing proper support for your feet will pay off dividends later.
Generally it is very important to exercise and stretch and that including gardeners as well. Gardeners tend to sit hunched over for a long time, and they should try and remember to stretch often and take breaks as needed. If you enjoy your garden and gardening and do it often, you may be able to talk to your doctor and find out any additional supports you can buy. There are a variety of back and body oriented things that help you avoid pains and any issues.
