Understanding Your Body and Back Pain

Posted on 2010-02-26 07:57:18

Have you ever woken up and experienced a back ache or pain in your neck or shoulders?

Have you ever experienced numbness or tingling in your toes or fingertips?

Often times, an obvious injury does not cause these symptoms or the pain associated with them. In fact, more often than not, everyday activities cause many of these painful injuries of the neck and spine. For instance, sitting at your desk with slumped shoulders can lead to severe pain and tightness throughout the neck and shoulders. Driving in your car can cause pain as well. Even sleeping can lead to back pain! Our bodies were designed to accomplish a wide array of tasks and for the most part, they do a remarkable job. There are instances though in which our bodies are thrown a curveball or two and consequently we experience some kind of discomfort or pain.

In the last twenty years, we as a society have become very well educated on diet and nutrition as well as general health and physical fitness. With the advent of the Internet, just about anyone can learn how to lose weight, how to gain strength, or how to exercise properly. Unfortunately, we often neglect to learn about the effects that many of the “healthy” activities we enjoy can do harm to our neck and spine. Far too many of us just accept the pain they experience as a badge of honor for all their toil in the gym.

Thankfully, Gyms and Health Clubs across the country have instilled the services of Chiropractors to assist their members in dealing with back and neck pain, stiffness in the shoulders and spine alignment. To our benefit, Chiropractic is not a secret society any longer.

A regimen of good nutrition and exercise is essential to a healthy lifestyle. Chiropractic completes the circle of health by keeping our spines healthy. Maintaining our spine on a regular basis allows us to endure the rigors of physical activity or even our daily activities.Use the interactive 3D Spine Simulator to the right of the page to learn more about your spine, nerves and even vital organs and how they all work together. This is an amazing tool which allows you to view exactly which section of our spines effect certain parts of our bodies. There is a wealth of knowledge available in the 3D Spine Simulator. Avoid Injuries by Lifting Things Safely and Correctly

Posted on 2010-02-24 19:19:30

How many times have you heard someone say "I hurt my back lifting (insert item here______________")?
Lifting things is a major cause of back injuries such as pulled muscles and pinched nerves to even more serious conditions as herniated or bulging discs. According to some studies, back injuries are second only to the common cold in documented missed work days every year. Needless to say, it appears that if it is almost as easy to injure your back as it is to get the sniffles, then this phenomenon should probably be addressed.

Surprisingly enough, a heavy object isn't always the culprit that causes a person to become injured. Many times a twenty or thirty pound item can cause an injury which could sideline an otherwise healthy individual. As we discussed in the last blog, a strong core can be a lifesaver in regard to back injuries. However, a strong core is just one link in the chain that will keep you injury and pain free. Learning to lift things correctly can mean the difference between being laid up in bed in pain for the entire weekend and enjoying the weekend with friends and family.
Most lifting injuries are caused because an individual bends at the waist and essentially lifts an object with the arms and the back alone. This all too common but incorrect technique puts an enormous amount of stress on the back. When the back is enlisted to complete a task all on its own, injuries are likely to occur. Many minor and even major back and neck injuries can be avoided by applying a few easy techniques.
Let's look at these easy techniques that we can incorporate into our everyday lives and help us stay pain and injury free.

1) Stand close to the object that you wish to lift
2) Bend at the knees and keep your back straight and your eyes pointed forward
3) Hold the object close to your body and rise slowly with your legs
4) Slowly bend at the knees and lower the object into its intended place.

Follow these simple steps every time you need to lift something and give yourself a great chance to avoid painful injuries.

Get To The Core of Back Pain

Posted on 2010-02-22 21:00:42

Dealing with back pain, or better yet, managing back pain is a subject that can elicit as many opinions as
there are sufferers of this debilitating condition.

Thankfully, one aspect of back pain is universally agreed upon. Prevention is the best cure. But even if we are too late in preventing a back injury, we can still correct and reverse the symptoms
that plague so many of us.

Most back injuries could be prevented if our backs were protected properly. We can protect our backs against possible injury by strengthening our cores. The "Core" consists of the torso, abdomen, spine, hip, and pelvis. These muscles keep us stable and help to build a literal fortress around our spines that can prevent many back injuries. The good news is, developing these core muscles does not take an extraordinary amount of exercise, weight training, or thousands of sit ups or crunches.

Thousands of people develop back injuries by doing menial tasks such as lifting their children, or picking up a bag of groceries. Many have been brought to their knees by doing things as simple as making the bed, while with others, it's a slower process.
Sitting at a desk for eight hours a day can have a adverse effect on the back. Especially in poorly designed computer chairs that provide little or no support.

A unique device is available for back injury sufferers called a Body Blade. A Body Blade is about 36 inches long and about 3 inches wide and resembles a water ski. To properly use a Body Blade, it must be gripped with both hands in the center of the blade, either out in front of oneself or over their head, or even behind their back.
From there, a simple back and forth movement of the hands causes the blade to "wobble" and create tension and momentum that is felt throughout the core muscles.
Just a few minutes a day can develop all of the core muscles very efficiently, and best of all, easily.
There is no twisting or bending involved in using the Body Blade, and it can even be used while sitting in a chair.

The Body Blade strengthens a person's core and can help to overcome the weakness which causes someone to be injured in the first place.  The Body Blade comes highly recommend to prevent and possibly even treat certain back injuries.

You can Google the Body Blade or search Youtube to see the Body Blade in action, but be sure to consult with a Chiropractic Physician to find out if the Body Blade is right for you.

Remember. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Keep On Moving

Posted on 2010-02-18 21:26:59

Taking care of your body should be a high priority on everyone’s proverbial list of things to do. When the body is in optimum condition, it can do numerous jobs and tasks. Taking care of one’s body only requires the desire to keep moving and a commitment to keeping it moving. If you simply commit to exercising a set amount of minutes each day, your body will continue to work hard for you.

One of the more effective exercises that just about anybody can do, and doesn’t require any training or lessons, is walking. Walking regularly on a daily basis has been proven to improve health, and can give you the time you need to simply clear your mind. So the benefits are at least two fold, you get the exercise your body needs in order to keep in working order, and while walking you can clear some of your thoughts.

If you would rather have a more vigorous workout to energize your body, you can simply increase your speed, or even run. Just remember to stretch your muscles, and don’t tax your body so hard that you don’t want to continue exercising. Taking care of your body should be fun, and not such a chore. The body that you have is the only body that you’ll get, so it’s in your best interest to keep it healthy and in good condition. Exercise is good for your body, so remember to schedule your own needs first, and everything else will fall into place.
